What moved
Three observations the headline number does not convey on its own.
1. The YoY rate is ~28%, not 79%
The two-year doubling is compounding, not acceleration. Trailing-12 vs prior-12:
- April 2025 → March 2026: 6,529 papers/month average
- April 2024 → March 2025: 5,119 papers/month average
- +27.5% year-over-year
Faster than global GDP, faster than cloud-compute spend, faster than almost any macro indicator — and meaningfully below the "exponential takeoff" framing common in press coverage.
2. Volatility is structural
Compare August 2024 (3,981) with May 2025 (7,886) — a near 2× swing within a single year. arXiv submissions cluster around conference deadlines (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR). A single month's count moves more from seasonal deadline clustering than from any underlying shift in the field. Read the 6-month moving average or the YoY rate, not individual months, to infer direction.
3. Q1 2026 is the highest-volume Q1 in the window
